Identification help for distinguishing between Lygaeus equestris and Lygaeus simulans
Two species of seed bugs live in Hungary. The black-and-red-bug (Lygaeus equestris) and the Lygaeus simulans. They are very similar to each other, and it is not possible, or very difficult, to distinguish between the two species with the naked eye. In this article, I will try to highlight the differences necessary for species identification. Both species are common in Hungary.

The izeltlabuak.hu website primarily focuses on arthropods found in Hungary. This entry also deals with Hungarian fauna.
The antennae of the two species differ. The black-and-red-bug has straight antennae, while the Lygaeus simulans has antennae that strongly protrude to the side.

The hairiness of the scutellum of the two species differs. The black-and-red-bug has no erect hairs on its scutellum, while the Lygaeus simulans has several longer, erect hairs on its scutellum in addition to its flattened hair.

The shape of the red spot between the eyes of the two species differs. In the black-and-red-bug, the red area is separated from the eyes by a wide black band, while in the Lygaeus simulans this black band is narrower.

I thank Dávid Rédei and Előd Kondorosy for their help in the description.
