European Moth Nights 2024

This year marks the 21st time the European Moth Nights event is being held. The event organizer is the Lepidoptera Mundi website and its partners have set the event period for 2024 to July 4-8. During this time, participants collect information about observed moths across Europe. The event aims to purposefully boost research on moths and draw attention to moths and their research. Among the initial goals was to bring together moth enthusiasts, whether professionals or amateurs. During the announced period, anyone can participate in the event with documented observations of moths. The event also has Hungarian connections. It was originally created from the idea and organization of Dr. László Rézbányai, who was the initiator together with Mihály Kádár in Debrecen.

Note about izeltlabuak.hu (arthropods)

The izeltlabuak.hu website primarily focuses on arthropods found in Hungary. This entry also deals with Hungarian fauna.

Participation in the event

No registration is required on the organizers' website for the event, but they expect documented submission of observations in a specific format. izeltlabuak.hu undertakes to format the observed data and submit it to the organizers. They also expect values that we would not normally request from users when recording observations. We ask participants for these after registering for the event.

Registration for the event on izeltlabuak.hu

The izeltlabuak.hu community education and data collection platform, similar to the European Moth Nights organizers, considers it important to help each other learn about moths. Due to common goals, in 2024 we will also facilitate data collection and forward the data of observed moths to the organizers. Join the event, organize moth observation events with friends, or individually!

This year's novelty is that we only forward observations to the organizers from those who specifically want to participate. Therefore, participation is optional but requires registration. With this, we want to bring the event to the foreground and encourage everyone to participate. Furthermore, this ensures the opportunity for participants to provide observation data that we would not normally collect on izeltlabuak.hu, but the event organizers require. Such as providing observer names in the format specified by the organizers, and the observation method, which in case of light trapping consists of specifying the lamp type and observation duration. Otherwise, it consists of a detailed description of the trapping method or specifying the observation circumstances. When specifying the observation method, the organizers prefer English descriptions, but Hungarian details are also acceptable.

You can register in your profile settings on the dedicated subpage, or when recording a new observation. With registration, you can specify the default values for these data, which you can also change on the event settings page. When recording a new observation, these data are automatically filled in the appropriate fields, which you can edit per observation if you wish. Registration is possible even after the event starts. In this case, our specified default data will also apply to your previous observations that fall within the event period. Users registered for the event and recording species-identified moths during the event period will receive a unique badge on their profile page, and their observations will appear on the event izeltlabuak.hu summary page.

Since taxonomic classification is not mandatory when recording observations, we request the supplementary fields for every observation and only submit them if the observed animal falls within the scope of animals to be observed during the event.

The organizers expect species-identified adult observations of all moth groups except families counted as butterflies and micro-moths.

  • you will receive a unique badge on your profile page that proves your participation

  • similar to last year, this year we have also created a summary page where we summarize moth observations recorded and observed during the event period. This year, we will highlight your observations.
