Developments and new features implemented in 2024

· 7 minutes read

During 2024, in addition to regular tasks, the following changes and new features were implemented:

  1. License management has significantly improved: it is now possible to set separate license for images and observations, we can choose from multiple Creative Commons licenses, and the settings are more flexible for imported content. The purpose of the changes is to allow users to better manage the license of their own content, and for the system to better align with international standards.

Note about izeltlabuak.hu (arthropods)

The izeltlabuak.hu website primarily focuses on arthropods found in Hungary. This entry also deals with Hungarian fauna.

  1. Data export has been completely renewed: it has become faster and accessible to everyone. It automatically creates snapshots of the data according to the Darwin Core standard. This enables more efficient data sharing and utilization.

  1. Since July 2024, izeltlabuak.hu cooperates with GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility). Our species-level validated observations and their associated images automatically appear on the international platform, where we currently share more than 340,000 observation data. This makes izeltlabuak.hu Hungary's largest arthropod data provider on GBIF.

  1. Changes occurred in the website's infrastructure, which fundamentally changed the system's operation. As a result of the changes, serving has become faster, more flexible and more easily expandable, which improved the user experience and enabled faster introduction of new features.
  1. Our user overview page has been renewed. It has become faster, new features have been added that help interaction between users and data sharing.

  1. Our notifications subpage has also been renewed. Here you can review the identifications received for our observations. It follows the style of other subpages, has become faster and more transparent. A new menu item called System Messages has been added, where we notify about news and information related to the website.

  1. Our identification review pages (Observations identified for a user and Observations identified by a user) have been renewed:

  1. A user's observation groups, pages listing observations belonging to an observation group, and pages for editing observation group data have been renewed.

  1. A user's observed categories and user's observation overview has completely changed. Its structure aligns with the previously introduced pages that review domestic arthropods. Similarly, it has become faster and more transparent. We can narrow down taxonomic groups observed by a user starting from higher taxonomic classification to family, genus, then species level.

  1. A user's observation overview has also been expanded with new features. It is now possible to view observations belonging to a species displayed on a map.

Previously, there was no possibility to list a user's observations by genus. Now we can also review the species observed belonging to the given genus and the observations belonging to the genus.

  1. We can now participate in domestic or international events by recording our observations that require special registration or providing unique data. In 2024, we participated in two such events:

European Moth Nights 2024

and National Moth Week 2024

  1. We reward participation in various events with newly introduced badges. Later we would like to extend this to others as well, for example rewarding participation in data recording or identification, or recording special species.
Badges appear on the profile page and are also accessible on a separate page.
