Samsung Gallery location data sending - Problem and solution

· 2 minutes read

The problem

When recording data on izeltlabuak.hu, if we select an image whose metadata includes location coordinates, it automatically appears on the map. When using Samsung phones, it may happen that automatic location marking does not occur during observation recording. This happens when we select our images using the Samsung Gallery app during image upload.

Note about izeltlabuak.hu (arthropods)

The izeltlabuak.hu website primarily focuses on arthropods found in Hungary. This entry also deals with Hungarian fauna.

Why does this happen?

The Samsung Gallery app citing privacy reasons automatically disables location data sending when we share images or copy them to other apps. This function cannot be modified. This has been confirmed by Samsung customer service.

The solution

To avoid the problem, the default image selector can be used instead of the Samsung Gallery app. If we want a similar experience to Gallery, we can also use alternative apps such as Google Photos.

This way, location data is properly transmitted.

Why is location data important?

Location data is essential for arthropod monitoring, so it must be provided when recording observations. Location data helps with the following purposes:

  • Mapping species occurrence areas
  • Tracking changes in territorial distribution
  • Ensuring scientific data quality
  • Nature conservation use

Summary

Although the Samsung Gallery app provides useful features, when recording observations it is worth using another app such as Google Photos or the default image selector. This way we can ensure that location data is properly preserved and contributes to quality data collection.
