New and rare weevil species in Hungary
A new publication by Valentin Szénási titled 'New and rare fungus weevil and snout beetle species in Hungary (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea)' has been published in Volume 87 of Folia Entomologica Hungarica.

About the study
The study reports one new species for Hungary and new occurrence data for five rare species in the superfamily Curculionoidea. The most important result is the first Hungarian occurrence record of Eusphyrus vasconicus, which is also the 1236th species in the country's weevil fauna. The species was found in June 2025 in Őrtilos (Somogy County) within the Mura-Drava-Danube Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, during a collecting expedition organized jointly by WWF Hungary and the Hungarian Biodiversity Research Society to study the area's biological diversity.
Eusphyrus vasconicus is a fungus weevil species (Anthribidae) previously known only from France, Italy, and Spain. Since all other species in the genus occur in America, the question arises whether this species' European occurrence is native or introduced.
The study also describes new localities for five rare weevil species:
- Mogulones albolineatus. The species remains very rare and endangered in Hungary.
- Otiorhynchus aurifer. The species occurs mainly in Southern Europe, but has been expanding in human environments in recent years.
- Rhinusa rara. Based on targeted research, the species is far less rare in Hungary than previously thought.
- Ranunculiphilus italicus. This Palaearctic species is considered rare, with only very limited data available in Hungary as well.
- Stenocarus ruficornis. An atypically colored specimen from Békés County.
These species have been added to the Hungarian species list on izeltlabuak.hu.
