Our pages that present arthropods by taxonomic classification and list observations have received a new feature. In May 2023, we renewed our taxonomic subpages for orders, families, genera and species. Since then, you can review the Hungarian arthropod fauna and related observation data faster and more simply on modern interfaces. Since February 2024, you can also see the taxonomic category overview of a user's observations in this new view.

This year marks the 21st time the European Moth Nights event is being held. The event organizer is the Lepidoptera Mundi website and its partners have set the event period for 2024 to July 4-8. During this time, participants collect information about observed moths across Europe. The event aims to purposefully boost research on moths and draw attention to moths and their research. Among the initial goals was to bring together moth enthusiasts, whether professionals or amateurs. During the announced period, anyone can participate in the event with documented observations of moths. The event also has Hungarian connections. It was originally created from the idea and organization of Dr. László Rézbányai, who was the initiator together with Mihály Kádár in Debrecen.

Changes to license settings

On the izeltlabuak.hu website, our users share their own observation data and images with the community. These are their property, and they can decide how others can use them, for example in an educational article or when appearing in a scientific publication.

We strive to provide the most convenient and comprehensive setting interfaces for these as well. The changes better align with user needs and international trends.

The new settings also favor interoperability between different platforms. For distribution data, the use of standard methods enables data sharing for research and nature conservation purposes.

The competition

The Butterfly Conservation Section of the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society announced a data collection competition in April 2023 for the 2023 Butterfly of the Year, the swallowtail butterfly. The goal of the game was to raise awareness about the protection of the swallowtail butterfly and, in general, about nature conservation challenges affecting butterflies and the reasons for their decline. The swallowtail butterfly, the Butterfly of the Year, was particularly vulnerable due to the cold periods that began in recent years and intensive pesticide use, making the competition of great importance for species protection.

izeltlabuak.hu contribution to the European Stag Beetle Monitoring project

· 4 minutes read

Arno Thomaes contacted us on October 18, 2023, to request data on the domestic distribution of the European stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) for the European Stag Beetle Monitoring Project. The project is working on establishing a European network, the European Stag Beetle Monitoring Network, which monitors the beetle's distribution to support species knowledge and conservation. Arno is one of the coordinators of the initiative.

The project expected detailed data from observations recorded since 2000. This included 1,094 records, which we also provided to the initiative. The provided data is available here.

Observations recorded on izeltlabuak.hu, including European stag beetle observation data, are open access and freely available for scientific projects, such as the Stag Beetle Monitoring project.

The European stag beetle is one of Europe's largest beetles, with distinctive males and females. Males are larger, distinctive with their reddish-brown mandibles, while females are smaller but have stronger mandibles.
