Names and Taxonomic Classifications

Note about izeltlabuak.hu (arthropods)

The izeltlabuak.hu website primarily focuses on arthropods found in Hungary. This entry also deals with Hungarian fauna.

Introduction

For each taxon, we strive to use current, scientifically recognized names and taxonomic classifications from authoritative sources and track their changes.

On the izeltlabuak.hu site, we use one taxonomic classification and one default scientific and Hungarian name. For species, we display the names that occur in different sources. In case of discrepancies, we select a default name.

Taxonomic Classification

It often happens that there is no agreement among taxonomic authorities regarding classifications.

Example of a discrepancy: one author treats a genus as a genus, while another treats it as a subgenus under another genus. (Dorcadion, Aphodius, ...)

Another example: some sources split a species into two species, while others treat it as one species.

You can read about the applied taxonomic classifications here.

Scientific Name

Scientific names can also differ between sources.

For species, we present the names that occur in different sources in detail on the species page. In case of discrepancy, we mark a default name that we use in the different appearances of the species on the site.

For scientific names, displaying different names is more of historical significance. Over time, a taxon's name and classification also change. In an older work, it may still appear under its older name.

Hungarian Name

For arthropods, there is no accepted Hungarian name. Perhaps this is why Hungarian names often differ in different sources. However, on the izeltlabuak.hu site, we are forced to choose a default Hungarian name, since we cannot display multiple names in the different appearances of the names.

For species, we present the names that occur in different sources in detail on the species page.

This implementation is not perfect. We have plans to present the actual state in sources, and changes to the display of Hungarian names are expected in the future.

Change List

Monthly, or after processing a larger source, we publish a change list in which we track changes in the names and classifications of taxa, and mark newly added taxa to the domestic fauna.
