Overview​

Every observation and image you create represents important scientific and educational value. Setting usage licensing helps determine how others can use this data - whether for scientific research, book publishing, or social media sharing.

izeltlabuak.hu users can access their usage licensing for images and observations through the 'Usage Licensing Settings' menu item in their profile settings.

These licensing determine what is required for someone to use your images or observations on their website, in a book, or even on social media.

Free Culture​

Licenses clearly regulate how images or observations can be used for educational, scientific, or any other purpose.

As committed supporters of free culture, we have set the primary usage licensing to the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license for both images and observations. Like other free licenses, no separate permission request is required for use, but it is mandatory to mention the author's name, source URL, and license name.

Different licenses have additional unique properties, so it's worth studying them on their official websites, which the links in their names point to.

Setting Usage Licensing​

Users can choose from various free licenses, or they can select the 'All Rights Reserved' license, which requires the author's consent, i.e., the user who recorded the observation or image, for use.

We also share data with GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) platform. This is an internationally accepted and recognized interface, the purpose of which is to centrally aggregate and publicly publish biodiversity data. GBIF only supports CC-BY and CC-BY-NC licenses from the list items. It is advisable to consider this when selecting usage licensing.

On observation pages and various display locations of images, we clearly, in detail and transparently show their usage licensing. We detail the properties of licenses, provide examples of use, which can be copied to clipboard with one click by those who want to use them, so they can provide proper attribution.

Usage Licensing for Imported Observations and Images​

On izeltlabuak.hu, currently only Flickr external platform allows image import. This will expand to other platforms in the future, and not only images but also observations can be imported from other suitable interfaces.

Users can only import their own observations and images, of which they are the copyright owner on both platforms. They can decide which platform's license should apply when using their images and observations.

Usage Licensing in Observation Export​

On izeltlabuak.hu, there is the possibility to export various observation data:

  • by taxonomic groups
  • we can export all observations of a specific user
  • or those in a search group

During export, we receive a zip compressed file that contains an observations csv file, an images file, and a text information file about the query details.

Integration with Other Systems​

Current usage licensing is suitable for maintaining close relationships with other platforms and easily connecting with the scientific community. The condition for open information flow is that data should be transparent and interoperable, and usage licensing should be clearly defined. We also try to comply with this so that we can help each other not only on the izeltlabuak.hu platform by sharing our knowledge, but also at a larger, international level.
