izeltlabuak.hu contribution to the European Stag Beetle Monitoring project

· 4 minutes read

Arno Thomaes contacted us on October 18, 2023, to request data on the domestic distribution of the European stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) for the European Stag Beetle Monitoring Project. The project is working on establishing a European network, the European Stag Beetle Monitoring Network, which monitors the beetle's distribution to support species knowledge and conservation. Arno is one of the coordinators of the initiative.

The project expected detailed data from observations recorded since 2000. This included 1,094 records, which we also provided to the initiative. The provided data is available here.

Observations recorded on izeltlabuak.hu, including European stag beetle observation data, are open access and freely available for scientific projects, such as the Stag Beetle Monitoring project.

The European stag beetle is one of Europe's largest beetles, with distinctive males and females. Males are larger, distinctive with their reddish-brown mandibles, while females are smaller but have stronger mandibles.

Moth observations at the National Moth Week 2023 event

About the National Moth Week event series

National Moth Week was held for the 12th time in 2023, this time during the July 22-30 period. The event finds increasing support and enthusiasm from the moth-loving community every year. The movement was originally limited to America, hence the "National" word in its name. Since then, it has outgrown its original boundaries and takes place as an international event series.

National Moth Week promotes the beauty and diversity of moths. The event encourages people of all ages and experience levels to learn, observe and document moths in their own gardens and other nearby locations. Participants get a unique opportunity to contribute to collecting scientific data about moth distribution through community research.

Participants could organize their own moth observation events, which they could optionally register on the organizers' website. During registration, they could provide details of their event, including their contact information, location, and whether the event was closed or open to additional participants. Registered participants could request a digital certificate from the organizers after the event ended to prove their participation.

Planned Transformation of the Identification System

· 5 minutes read

Summary

The transformation of the izeltlabuak.hu identification system has been in progress for several years. The current system only allows experienced identifiers to provide opinions on observations, but the planned new system will enable all users to participate in the identification process. This will be similar to the iNaturalist approach, but will prioritize the reliability of identifications. During development, the observation display interfaces have been redesigned, and changes are also planned in the taxonomic system database structure. The gradual introduction of the new system is expected once the dependencies are resolved.

Bugs in homes

· 5 minutes read

We often hear about bugs, especially during this late summer period of the year, that infiltrate our homes and drive many of us crazy. What can we know about these animals? True bugs (Heteroptera) are a species-rich suborder, with nearly 900 species living in Hungary. What makes bugs often come into focus is due to a few species. I would like to briefly introduce those that often fly into homes. If you have also seen any of them, record the observation and you can get identification from us.

Identification help for distinguishing between Lygaeus equestris and Lygaeus simulans

· 3 minutes read

Two species of seed bugs live in Hungary. The black-and-red-bug (Lygaeus equestris) and the Lygaeus simulans. They are very similar to each other, and it is not possible, or very difficult, to distinguish between the two species with the naked eye. In this article, I will try to highlight the differences necessary for species identification. Both species are common in Hungary.

Identification help for "papmacska" caterpillars. Distinguishing between common, black and brown tiger moths and fox moth caterpillars

· 5 minutes read

In late autumn and spring, when walking in forests and fields, we often see large, dark-colored, hairy caterpillars crossing the road or feeding on some herbaceous plant. People familiar with folk language easily call these "papmacska", but this name is only used for tiger moth caterpillars, primarily the garden tiger moth (Arctia caja) caterpillar, while the above description fits more species. With this article, I would like to help with their identification and distinction.
